Recently when we looked through old pictures, we realized to how many places we have been – long before we thought of or even started this blog. So, we decided to share with you once a week a place we explored in the past in our rubric “Been There Yesterdays”.
Whilst we worked on cruise ships we were lucky enough to visit Sydney as one of our port of calls on the Australia and New Zealand route.
The good news at that time was that we were both doing the same itinerary at the same time, the bad one was that we were stationed on different ships and missed each other by a few days in each port. Basically we sailed behind each other for six months, never saw each other but we kept leaving little gifts and letters for the other one in the ports with our port agents. How romantic! Looking back at it these are sweet memories, at the time it was difficult as we were not sure which direction our relationship would take. It is hard to believe that all of this took place back in 2007 and that we are married now expecting our first child!
As mentioned above, we have never been to Sydney together, but we both liked it – one of the most spectacular aspect was the sail in and out of port. It really felt as if that huge ship just parked downtown, between Harbor Bridge and the famous opera house. For the manoeuvre we used to get up at 4a.m. to witness how the captain, together with a local pilot, sailed into port and brought the vessel to its parking spot at the dock.
Usually we did not get a lot of time to explore the city in detail but for a stroll along the pier or a coffee there was always time.
Australia – a place we would go back to, especially to discover the inland as we have “only” seen coastal towns.
